History of Poole
Poole was founded in the 12th Century, but was historically inhabited by Pirates, Vikings and Saxons long before that. The towns history highlights many centuries, but there still remains a heavy focus on the role of pirates, particularly on Poole Quay. The Quay carries the most history within the town. It has played an important role in trading since medieval times and has evolved over time.
The Quay has been significant in trading for the town. From Newfoundland trade, the trading of salt cod with Spain, Portugal and Italy, in exchange for olive oil, salt and wine, to trading food in World War One and Two. Today trading has advanced, using big ferries and lines such as Truckline and Condor Ferries to import and export heavy machinery and cars.
There are many other attractions in Poole besides the Quay, including multiple parks and the old town. In the old town original Georgian mansions still stand. They were built by residents that became rich, due to their ties with Newfoundland trade.
Today Poole has become a hot-spot for innovation, technology and creativity. It is home to some of the UK’s most well-known luxury brands, including Lush, SunSeeker and Merlin Entertainment. It is the perfect place to inspire creativity and has many local facilities, including studio hire, a train station, bus and coach station, restaurants and hotels, helpful for those looking to film in the area. There are also many opportunities to explore new technologies and hire skilled labour from Poole.
