History of Bournemouth
Bournemouth was first developed in the 19th Century by Lewis Tregonwell, who built a house near the beach for his wife. Before this, Bournemouth consisted of mostly beach and heathland for cattle. Bournemouth continued to develop into a village and town in the 19th Century, with commercial shops and the Winter and Pleasure Gardens being the main attractions in the late 1800s. By the end of the 19th Century Bournemouth beach had become a popular holiday destination for middle and upper-class tourists.
